“The very meaninglessness of life forces man to create his own meaning. Children, of course, begin life with an untarnished sense of wonder, a capacity to experience total joy at something as simple as the greenness of a leaf; but as they grow older, the awareness of death and decay begins to impinge on their consciousness and subtly erode their joie de vivre, their idealism – and their assumption of immortality. This is so wonderful. My favorite track from Lonerism given a whole new life.

Even now, moving on towards a year after its release, I kind of feel like I need to explain — like I need to somehow justify — not liking Tame Impala’s Lonerism.

It’s not that I dislike the record. On paper it’s pretty much exactly my kind of thing, but after a fair number of listens scattered across a number of months the record just leaves me flat every time.

But for one reason or another I ended up listening to Hayley Coupon’s take on this song anyway, and I was immediately smitten.

It’s a casual, loose recording. Hayley’s voice is lovely. Simple instrumentation and arrangement. The whole thing just breathes.
